Fairs and open-air markets
The town of Michalovce organizes 3 important open-air markets throughout year. They are Christmas Market, Spring Market and Zemplín Fair, all of which are very popular with the citizens and merchants. Spring Market takes place from 30 April to 1 May. The markets are popular not only because of offering a wide rande of products to buy, but also for culutral program typical for the time of the year – Raising of Birch, performances of many folklore groups and ensembles. One of the very popular accompanying events is “Spring Award of Michalovce” – a competition in hurdle race.
Christmas market is popular because it takes place in the period before Christmas, usually the weekend before Christmas. This market is the longest one as it is stretched over three days and the visitors can buy different Christmas presents to please their beloved ones. The cultural program provided by the Cultural Centre features a lot of Christmas carols, shows presenting different Christmas habits and peaceful Christmas atmosphere.
Traditionally, every year in summer, at the third weekend of August more precisely, “Zemplín Fair” is organized, attracting a number of merchants and buyers not only from our town, but also from different parts of our country. Besides the shows of traditional crafts and sales booths, the evening entertainment on the amusement rides forms the part of the fair. Woven products, as well as woodcarving, smith’s, basketry, pottery, paintings and other products are present at the fair. The atmosphere of the fair is created also by the accompanying events as e.g. The Rabbit Breeders’ Exhibition, The Bonsai Exhibition. The attractiveness of the program is provided also by a ride of motorbikes across the town centre, which is a part of International Bikers Meeting organized by The World of Motorcycles magazine.
