Mayor of town
For the electoral period of 2007 - 2011 Mr. Viliam Zahorčák was elected the Mayor on 2 December 2006 with substantially greater number of votes in comparison with his opponent candidates.
Viliam Zahorčák was born on 21 July 1959. He graduated at Faculty of Arts of P. J. Šafarik University in Prešov, pedagogy of Slovak language - History in 1983. He started his career as a teacher at 6th Primary School in Michalovce. From 1986 he was employed at Pavol Horov Grammar School, first as a teacher, later as a Deputy Headmaster, and from 2001 he served as the Headmaster. In June 2006 he was re-elected the Headmaster unanimously by the school board, which gave him the right to serve on the position until 2011.
He joined the municipal politics in 1998 and he was elected a Deputy of Minicipal Council for Democratic Left Party (SDL) without being its member. In the elections to the Self-governing region Košice in 2001, as a member of SDL he received the most votes out of all the candidates from the district of Michalovce. He was re-elected a Deputy of Municipal Council in Michalovce for the second time in 2002.
He served as the Chairman of the Education, Culture, Youth, Sport, Social Affairs and Health Board. He is a Vice-chairman of “Matica Slovenská” – Slovak Cultural Authority’s local branch. Besides of his profession and municipal politics, he is active in the field of culture and sport being one of the organisers and a member of specialised panels, mainly at poetry-reading competitions, as well as hosting different cultural events. He used to be an active football player, he is a member of a puzzling and crosswords club Šíravan. He was on of the people to revive an amateur theatre in the town in the 1980s.
In the municipal elections in December 2006, being a candidate for the political party SMER-Social Democracy for the post of the town Mayor, he won with a considerably greater number of votes over the remaining eleven candidates for the post.
